Help me give my students Monday's Not Coming and book cafe items for our lunch book club group to promote reading, diversity, and empowers readers and leaders within the community.
My students walk into our school library with excitement in their eyes. They can't wait to be able to let their imagination go wild in the library Makerspace. You can see students taking apart and putting together computers, designing 3D models, constructing structures, learning about circuitry, or playing board games. You will also see students curled up in the corner reading a book or asking me for a new book for them to read. It always puts a smile on my face when they come back to me, after reading a book, to tell me how much they loved a book.
The library has become a safe place, where my students have an opportunity to experience things that they can't access otherwise because of their socioeconomic background, and one of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.
This project will help our ProjectLIT chapter grow by providing us with materials for our first ProjectLIT lunch book talk. We are in our second year of ProjectLIT and my students have been loving it so far.
My Project
My school has a very diverse population, but our students don't always have access to books that have diverse characters that represent them. Having access to these materials is such an important aspect in education because research actually shows that being exposed to people that are different from us actually helps reduce stereotypes.
Every student should feel like they are important and deserve to be able to choose books that have characters that represents themselves.
Monday's Not Coming is a ProjectLIT selection, which is a literacy movement empowering readers and leaders in hundreds of schools & communities across the country. Our school was selected to start a new ProjectLIT community and we are in year two of our journey, where we focus on topics such as race, poverty, abuse, social justice, and speaking up for ourselves. This project will provide our readers with copies of the book and materials for our lunch book club meeting. We will be able to have freshly made popcorn while we have meaningful discussions about our book selection. Each student will be able to take home their own custom book mark and they will each earn a lanyard with a button with the book cover on it. Thank you for helping to promote diversity and literacy in my school by helping our reading community to grow.
