Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from the inner city and are economically disadvantaged. Also, we recently are victims of Hurricane Harvey. Many of our students lost everything due to the catastrophic floods. What makes my classroom so special is they get to take journeys to different places, meet heroes and historical people, and gain so much knowledge through literature.
Initially, reading is their last choice as a favorite subject.
However, by the end of the semester, the students have a change of heart and fall in love with reading. I always tell my students, readers are leaders and reading is the foundation to their academic success.
My Project
Students need empowering picture books like Behind The Mask, I and You and Don't Forget Who, Dear Deer to help them become better readers and writers. The proven, research-based methodology for writing is introduce the concept or skill through the use of published examples, model the technique for the class using a "thinking out loud" (modeling is the necessary bridge between recognizing the techniques and applying them), guided practice, and the application piece. Using this successful technique will support the student's reading and writing. Therefore, my scholars need a variety of picture books to have choices during their independent reading time so they can apply it in their future writing.
According to the National Education Association, having kids read a lot is one of the crucial components of becoming a good reader and writer.
Furthermore, having these picture books at their finger tips will improve their school lives dramatically because of the exposure to all the variety of writing techniques authors use. Let's support these scholars by giving them the opportunity to read this authentic literature. Picture books are not for young students but for all scholars.
