This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My professional goal this year is to narrow the literacy gap by 10% among 9th-grade English students at our Title I Connecticut school. In the second semester, we'll introduce tiered level books by authors of color in both English and Spanish, enhancing access to equitable resources. The focus is on creating a positive reading atmosphere, celebrating student progress, ownership, and success.

This project is for diverse book purchases, classroom decorations, and rewards such as laminated certificates, snacks, and drinks which will help with our collective goal to accelerate student learning.

Students will choose from a curated selection of diverse books, setting SMART reading goals. The books in this project were specifically requested by my students to add to our classroom library which they would, otherwise, not be able to afford. Students will be able to use the printer to print their SMART GOALs using Canva and use the markers/pens to decorate. Regular 1:1 student-led book conferences will track progress, fostering a personalized approach. We'll foster a positive reading atmosphere, student choice, and dedicated reading time. Progress monitoring tools will guide adjustments, while achievements will be celebrated with the laminated certificates and students' snack and drink of choice requested in this project, fostering a sense of pride and motivation. My kids are wonderful, inquisitive, go-getters who want to build their literacy skills in order to apply those skills to their trades.
