Our school is a Title I neighborhood school that serves students TK-6 in Woodland, CA. My students learn best when they are engaged and excited about what they are doing. They prefer hands-on activities to pages in a workbook. They love having a flexible and alternative seating arrangement where they have flexibility to move around and work where we are the most comfortable. This is the first type of classroom at this school and many of the students coming up are looking forward to being able to have the experience of a 21st Century Classroom.
Flexible seating lets students decided where and how they'll sit to learn - not learn to sit. Bringing in alternative methods into the classroom, such as desk peddlers, lets students identify what is the most comfortable and gets them motivated to learn. This process promotes student creativity and collaboration. Having these options allow students to have choice which allows them to have control over their environment. It also builds community and students learn to take turns and share supplies. Flexible seating helps students to release excess energy while stimulating students' sense of touch. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive.
