I have been very fortunate to teach at my current school for the past ten years. I teach in a very small, rural community. Many of my students come from low-income homes.
Although these students don't always have the best, they are sure to bring their best.
Our students come to school with a smile on their faces and an eagerness to learn as much as possible. Our students are willing to work hard and are always showing their dedication to learning.
My Project
I am requesting seven activity kits that will allow hands on learning for students in the areas of STEM. I carefully chose activities that will engage the students while they are learning through exploration. Through exploration students will not only learn how things work but also why things work the way they do.
There's no better way to learn than by doing.
Sure my students can read about how everyday objects work and we can even learn about it online but the tactile experience is what students will remember. The activities I'm requesting will engage students in hands on activities where they will actually experiment with: levers, pulleys, gears, spatial building, and moving parts.
The seven activities I’m requesting are: an interactive coding Robot, a strategy game using spatial reasoning, a lever & pulley building set, exploring gears, quick acting mathematical strategy game, a game that students build using suspensions, and a building set that requires students to use balance/proportion. These hands on STEM activities will require students to cooperation and problem solve with their peers to learn how and why things work the way they do. Our society is becoming so dependent on technology alone that I feel it's necessary to show students that technology is not the only answer. I want to give students the opportunity to explore strategies by using cooperation, problem solving, and trial and error. Thank you for considering helping me to put Science back into students' hands.
