This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are diamonds--resilient young people who carry hope and develop despite pressures and challenges. Coming from the heart of Washington, DC, my diamonds are predominantly African-American; many are from a lower socio-economic background. Most importantly, they are poets and dreamers and engineers and athletes and critical thinkers and revolution starters.
Although each year, I am blown away by my students' character.
They are brave risk-takers and fearless learners, embracing any academic challenge and overcoming every obstacle. I'm so honored to work with these inspiring young people every day!
My Project
The other day, my students stopped to ask me a set of poignant questions. "Why don't we learn about slavery? Why don't we learn about Black history?" This was a troubling question as I am limited in my curriculum, but I had an idea of how to meet their request: book circles.
By providing empowering, relevant books, students can extend their learning and engage in topics that interest them.
Many of my students are already eager readers, and I can see their genuine interest in these topics. I would love to be able to fulfill their request and allow them to choose what they read, outside of a prescriptive set of texts that don't reflect the students. My students are very excited about this, and they are hoping to start this next quarter!
