Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have been very enthusiastic about their willingness to learn and their desire to become better students. Almost the entire class at the beginning of the year made it their goal to earn a higher GPA than they did last school year.
I am new to teaching elementary education, and unfortunately do not have all of the materials necessary in my classroom.
I am very excited to help my students be as prepared as possible to move on to Middle School next year!
My Project
Through this time of school closures, I have been able to read many books and articles about best teaching practices. After reading "Becoming the Math Teacher You Wish You'd Had" I am inspired to make math instruction more vibrant, engaging, and student-led in my classroom.
I am striving to create instruction that students are interested in and excited about!
Through the use of manipulatives, I hope that the students in my class will build their conceptual understanding of the math topics in 5th and 6th grade, not just procedural understanding. Specifically, the geoboards, power polygons, and three-dimensional figures will help students explore the attributes of shapes and figures! Blockhead will help students to see that being a mathematician does not simply involve following a prescribed set of steps, but rather exploration and experimentation! I hope that these materials will begin to help my students change their mindset and view of math.
Additionally, as a 5th and 6th-grade teacher next year, I would love to be able to add some engaging novel studies for my 5th-grade students! Over the last two years, I have used novel studies to teach my 6th-grade students about reading skills, proper grammar, and text features. They have loved the engaging narratives and memoirs! I hope to read My Side of the Mountain, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and Number the Stars with my 5th graders! I already know they will love learning about survival in the mountains of New York, a clever and inventive boy in Malawi, and a courageous girl during World War II.
