My students are resilient, motivated, and persevering, even though many are low-income and their families may be struggling financially. Whether they are Yupik, Tlingit, Athabascan, Inupiaq, Aleut, or from another culture, my students are excited and enthusiastic to share where they come from and their dreams for the future.
My school is a melting pot of students from all over Alaska, who are deeply tied to their native heritage, culture, and language and love to express the importance of their cultural identity through art.
For the last year and a half, our school has been displaced due to the unsuitability of the air quality of our building. As a result, we are temporarily being housed in a wing in a nearby high school. This has been an incredibly difficult challenge for students and staff and I would love to give my students some semblance of normalcy by providing wonderful art supplies to fuel their creativity.
The purpose of this project is to empower students in my art elective class and after school art club to learn how to screen print t-shirts to raise money for our art department. Students will learn everything from designing a logo that represents our school to printing with silk screens, to advertising our product, and keeping track of all funds. I believe that such a unique opportunity will provide students with a sense of pride that their artistic designs are being used to promote our wonderful school. They will also learn small business skills in the process.
My students will be so excited to see their designs come to life from a sketch, to printing it digitally, to screen printing it onto a t-shirt. Students' creativity will grow in extraordinary ways and they will learn the importance of fundraising and giving back to their school.
