Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“It doesn't matter where you are, you are nowhere compared to where you can go."~Bob Proctor
It is imperative that my students have access to high-quality instruction to enhance their learning, independence, confidence, and motivation so that they can successfully transition to adulthood.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism, and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting, and includes hands-on learning.
My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities, and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learner status, or disabilities hinder their goals or academic and social-emotional growth.
My Project
By attending the ASCD Virtual Conference: Empowered and Connected, I will have the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions that focus on academics, technology, SEL, and financial literacy. As a special education teacher, I am responsible for supporting students in reaching both their academic and transition goals, so we work on a variety of skill areas.
This conference will benefit my students as it is so important for them to gain academic, SEL, and transition skills in order to gain independence.
It is imperative that my students learn how to independently work towards academic gains as well as fiscal responsibility as they transition to the real world. This conference will allow me to learn strategies and curriculum that I will then be able to incorporate into my lessons to benefit student progress.
