This year I am working with fourth grade students in a small, economically disadvantaged, city in New York State. The majority of the students work hard and want to learn despite the many challenges they face daily. They have dreams of being paleontologists, doctors, football players, and chefs. These students have a wide range of abilities, skills, and talents. They love science and are curious about the world around them. They really are an amazing group of kids.
Amongst the group, however, we also have several students who have fallen below the grade level average.
These students typically need a ton of motivation and a reason to read! I want to give these students a learning environment where they feel empowered by choice, where they feel comfortable reading and taking risks.
My Project
Students will be able to move about the room and find a place that works best for them. Different options will provide students with their own learning space, while allowing their young bodies freedom of movement. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
Students will be more engaged and get more work completed.
I love that students will be able to easily move these options around to find a safe, comfortable working environment for them! We will be able to use them at our small group to create a welcoming safe space conducive to learning!
