I have 20 students in my third grade class. Our class contains students with varying abilities, including students in Basic Skills, students with IEPs, English language learners, and students who perform above grade-level expectations. They are diverse in family backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic statuses, and many other factors.
"At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents." - Jane D Hull.
This school year I started implementing methods for stronger parent-teacher communication. The one I use the most is Seesaw Learning Journal, through which students can complete activities, post pictures, or take videos to show their learning throughout the year.
My Project
My goal is to provide my class with technology to empower them to create their own learning journals and portfolios. With the use of the HP Chromebook, my students will be able to take pictures of their work, voice-over their writing pieces, and take videos of all the skills from reading to math to science. My students will have the opportunity to showcase their work will give a sense of pride in their efforts and accomplishments.
In addition to the benefits for the students, this will help bridge the gap between home and school communication.
When parents look at the homework coming home, they are seeing academic terms that were not used back when we were in school: function machines, KLEWS, inferencing, etc. How can they be expected to support their child in acquiring these skills if they do not know what they are? I have been able to use a chromebook to post screen casts, videos of mini lessons, pictures with labels, and general notes to help explain step by step what we are learning and, most importantly, how we are learning it. With this Chromebook for the students, I will be able to put the power into their hands. They will be able to use the device themselves to share what is going on in school with their families.
