Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the honor and privilege to teach middle school students with special needs. What is special about our classroom is that it is one of the few spaces where students feel safe, successful, and included throughout their school day. Even though we have a very diverse population of special education students, students embrace one another with strength-based lenses of inclusion. In our class we focus on social-emotion learning with an emphasis on improving reading and writing skills.
Despite their disabilities, my students are motivated, compassionate, and above all leaders, who deserve equitable access to education.
They are passionate about social justice, entrepreneurship, and creating a better world. They are athletes, scientists, artists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, future teachers, and above all beautiful.
My Project
All students deserve access to equitable education. In today’s economy, it’s harder than ever to find the funds for supplemental educational materials for special education students. In addition, many of our students’ families can’t afford to help bring these motivating resources into the classroom. Despite poor funding in our country for education, our youth need to be a top priority on the national and local level.
Without engaging, relevant, and current curriculum, students with special needs will continue to fall behind their grade level peers.
Scholastic Action magazine is specifically designed as a reading intervention program. It is one of the best and most affordable reading intervention programs I have found. It not only provides relevant and current articles, but also integrates the needed accommodations for students with disabilities to access the content. Scholastic provides a 21st century approach to reading, by making all articles accessible online through a student subscription. Using our classroom laptops, students can make annotations, listen to the audio presentation, watch videos, and engage with the content through writing prompts. Students are able to develop their digital literacy in order to gain the necessary skills to close their opportunity gaps and be prepared for their futures.
Our classroom is asking for 40 memberships to Scholastic Action Magazine. Every 10 dollar donation gives one student a subscription for the entire school year. This includes monthly hard copies to take home and share with their families!
