Empathy from Around the World

Help me give my students empathy for walks of life that are different from their own. We will read three books from 3 different parts of the globe so we can enter into the main characters' stories.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students work harder than any kids I have ever met. They go to school for a longer day and a longer year so they can have a better chance at college choice. They complete homework in every subject, every night and they are still involved in sports, church and family. My students love to read, especially real books not just stories on worksheets. Stories of people who overcome obstacles are especially important to my students.

I have some students who have read over a million words every school year.

My Project

My students are part of a leadership class and we love to read books that allow us to grow our empathy. "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park is a true story about a Sudanese refugee boy who came to America in the 1980s. In the second part of the story he returns to the Sudan as an adult and builds a school. Learning what it is to give back to society is an important leadership lesson. "Ghost Boys" is a fictional story about a young boy mistakenly shot. He stays on the Earth as a ghost to work on the issue of racism, striking up a friendship with a person of different gender and race. And "American Born Chinese" offers a perspective on life from the point of view of Chinese culture.
