My class is one of four kindergarten rooms in a large school building that serves over 550 students. Our school serves a low SES population and provides 100% free and reduced lunch for the students who attend. In order to create the best learning environment for these students, I want to incorporate more diverse and engaging items into our space. I want to create a peaceful, welcoming, and safe environment for the students who spend their days with me.
My students are a fun, creative, and energetic group who deserve a space with tools that serves their needs and interests.
My Project
The items I am asking for in this project range from crayons that come in a range of skin colors to books at my students reading levels and lego building blocks!
I am looking for books to help students build empathy, and show diversity, tools for small groups, and engaging items for structured play.
Kindergartens need more play time than they are often given during their school day. I would love to be able to incorporate more engaging items into our structured play time that can also overlap into our STEM time. Legos and Magnetiles allow students to think creatively and practice engineering skills.
The books that are part of this project serve two purposes. Some of the books will be used to incorporate more social skills curriculum, kindergarten students need engaging instruction that they relate to help them work out social problems. The other books in this project are books that many of the students can read on their own.
Lastly, I have asked for crayons that will match a diverse range of skin tones and letter stamps. I want students to never be left feeling that they cannot find a color that does not match them. These stamps would be used in small groups as we develop our writing and fine motor skills in the fall and then as we begin spelling more complex words.
