I work as the school counselor at Mountainside Elementary School. I meet with students individually, in small group settings, and in the classroom setting. It is difficult for children to do their best academically if they are struggling with their emotions, social issues, or other things in their personal lives.
With the pandemic I have seen a big increase in children struggling with anxiety.
This makes it difficult for them to want to come to school and impacts their ability to focus when they are in class. I love being able to teach young children healthy coping tools that they can use throughout their lives. I love being able to go into the classroom setting to teach SEL lessons and sending corresponding parent letters home so they can reinforce what is being taught in the home setting. I also enjoy helping teachers come up with ideas and solutions for students who are struggling regulating behaviors and emotions in the classroom setting.
As the school counselor I am a "helper" not a "fixer." I love the opportunity I have been given to teach children tools and empowering them to get through and conquer challenges as they arise.
My Project
As the school counselor we have seen an increase in anxiety with students over the past couple of years with the pandemic. I meet with students individually, in small group settings, and in the classroom settings to teach emotional/behavioral regulation skills.
Students who struggle with managing emotions, behaviors, have other things going on in their personal lives have difficulty focusing and doing their best academically.
These tools will allow me to help students develop skills necessary to make friendships, focus on learning at school, and help them process trauma they may have faced over the course of this pandemic. This project will allow me to meet the needs of many more students than I'm able to currently.
