This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students are struggling to learn the alphabet which is a fundamental step for reading. I work as a reading interventionist at my school and intervene when typical instruction is not working. At this point in the year, all but two Kindergarten students and two 1st grade students are beginning readers. These four students have more intense needs.

We started the year learning the letters in their first name and now they can say, spell, and write their first and last names!

We sing in every lesson. I read aloud to them. But they have a lot more to learn. They need to have a variety of activities to practice identifying letters, forming the letters and recognizing simple words such as "the" or "is" to help them move forward. Because they require lots of repetition to master new material, having new ways to teach them is helpful.
