This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach students who are performing far below grade level in a high poverty, bilingual public school in Washington DC. My students are almost all Hispanic and are reading far below grade level. They face challenges both inside and outside school--some live with their entire family in one bedroom of an apartment. However, they dream big and my goal, as a teacher, is to make their dreams come true! Our school fosters the belief that all children have the ability to go to college, and we work as a team towards that end.

The students in my reading and writing groups are intelligent students who are, nevertheless, reading and writing two to three years below grade level.

My goal is to increase my students' reading and writing ability dramatically. I hope you will partner with me to make this dream come true!

My Project

These materials will allow us to create a haven for reading and writing with all the tools my students need to succeed! Having a printer in our classroom, instead of having to walk a block to the school's only functioning printer, will allow students to print and revise their work immediately. The large post it boards and markers allow me to post reminders to help my students build on their close reading and writing skills. The journals and pocket folders will hold their daily writing assignments.

A writing center will hold all the tools they need to read and write like professionals!

They can write with markers of all colors, grab post its to take notes on their reading, and have at their fingertips all the materials they need to be successful!
