I teach first grade in a title one school in Sunset Park. My class is comprised of twenty English Language Learners. My students learn the language as they learn to read and write. It is an enormous task but they have such a committment to learning and a willingness to take a risk that they succeed and learn. It is very important to me that my students feel the classroom is a place where everyone's best effort is accepted. While many of my students can read the books I have available, there is a group that is still just emerging as readers. I want to give my newest, most challenged readers an opportunity to read a “just right” book. These children need very simple books. I would like a set of Rigby PM Plus Starters. These books have tremendous picture support and very predictable text. My students need the support of predictable, engaging books. The limited text gives them an opportunity to tackle print without becoming overwhelmed. The multiple copies of each title encourage and foster book talk. The pictures offer opportunities to build language for those who are not ready to tackle the print. My students have a long road ahead of them as readers, but with the right tools my emergent readers can become amazing readers.
