Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from immigrant families and live in a low-income urban area. They are faced with tons of challenges that they have to overcome on a daily basis, including difficult living situations, not enough money for food, and learning difficulties.
Dealing with all of this at such a young age is such a huge weight on their shoulders.
I want to be able to provide my students a positive and comfortable environment where they can work to their greatest potential. I believe education can change the world and my hope is for myself and my students to make a positive change in this world.
My Project
In the community where I teach, we're lucky to have many Emergent Bilinguals: students who speak or are learning to speak more than one language! It makes our school so unique and I learn so much from my students! I would love to help my Emergent Bilingual students learn more English so they can increase their proficiency and confidence.
I am requesting many materials to help me provide engaging centers and independent work for when students are not in a group with me working on increasing their language proficiency.
The first thing I am requesting is the English Language Learner Games Library. These games include 8 different games for multiple children to play at a time. Each of the games helps students build skills in grammar, vocabulary, or usage in English, and they are super engaging!
The next thing is English Language Development Writing Center. This center is a dry erase center, which is great because students can move on if they are finished and wipe it clean for another student to use! This writing center helps students practice skills like subject and verb agreement, pronouns, adjectives, and prepositions. Students love anything that has to do with dry erase markers and these activities are so simple, yet engaging!
I also am asking for Sequence and Writer Story Tiles, where students can look at pictures and put them in the correct sequential order, and then write about what is happening in the pictures using transition words.
The last resource I am requesting is the Positional Words Resource Box. In this activity, they pick a card and must use manipulatives to match what the direction on the card is. For example, "put the car under the bridge."
Having these materials in our classroom would truly help my Emergent Bilinguals!
