Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The population I serve has a high poverty rate. About 99% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches and about 95% are English language learners. Many of the students receive backpack weekend lunches. They sometimes receive dental and optometrist services through our school nurse and school sponsors.

Regardless of the obstacles facing my students and the labels placed on them, they are more than these challenges---much more.

They are loving, compassionate, and eager to learn. They are problem solvers, mathematicians, readers, writers, and dreamers. They are full of hope and desire to better themselves.

My students arrive with a positive attitude to an environment that does not readily support their native language but appreciates and embraces their customs and backgrounds. They are breaking through stigmas, labels, and barriers because, as a school system, we believe our students can accomplish more.

My Project

The books I am requesting are to help my emergent readers practice their reading strategies at home. I have wrapped up my parent conferences for the first semester. The one common factor holding back families from participating is a deficit in the English language in supporting my kindergarteners with their reading. In order to help solve this deficit in my classroom...

I am asking for English-Spanish emergent readers to help my kindergarteners and their families share their native language while they acquire the English language at school.

My goal is to have the families that are comfortable enough, record themselves reading with their child in hopes of modeling for others the importance of reading.

I am also requesting challenging readers for my monolingual students and batteries to place in flashlights in order to support new reading strategies for all my students.
