Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have over 600 students, 85% of which are Hispanic, of those 50% are English Language Learners, with over 30% of those students being new to our country within their first year with us. Our students are by Federal DOE standards Title I with over 85% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch, meaning they fall beneath the bottom 30% of income wage earners for our area. Our families are blue-collar workers, and almost 90% of our students walk to school from the surrounding 5-mile radius of the neighborhood- to which many families do not have transportation. The neighborhood has a higher than average crime rate, and with many of our families now financially being effected by the emergency lockdown it is crucial to insure our students have adequate clothing, underwear, socks, and shoes to re-enter school with a sense of school pride and unity especially now as we enter back to school after the lockdown.
My Project
Our students rely on an emergency clothing closet at our school for emergency shoes, socks, raincoats, umbrellas, school uniform clothing, bike helmets, backpacks, cold-weather apparel, and other critical supplies. Our students walk to and from school and rely on these items to be successful in school, especially bike helmets for safety. At times students may arrive to school in shoes that do not fit, are broken or have holes in them and may be without socks. These comfort items help us maintain basic needs for our students so they can focus on learning while feeling well-cared for. Our children are from low-income, Title I, predominantly multi-generational Hispanic households without transportation where English is s second language.
