Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Headstart classroom in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Headstart is a Michigan state and federally funded preschool program for three and four-year-old children with factors which may place them at risk of educational failure. On top of living at or below the poverty level, many of the students have experienced some kind of trauma already in their three years of life.
As the teacher in this room, I work every day to keep learning fun and engaging as well as create a safe learning environment full of love and acceptance.
The students in my classroom need an extra focus on how to appropriately manage their behaviors and feelings on top of being shown how to be in a school setting. This is all in addition to all of the other expectations in a regular preschool. All of these kids deserve a fair chance at education and it is my job to provide it.
My Project
I am starting a new school year in a new classroom that is at a new site. This site does not have any lockers for my students to put their belongings. The cubbies would be crucial for giving them a space to call their own.
A student's comfort is an important aspect to ensure they are maximizing their learning.
Having a spot to call their own in the classroom will make a student feel comfortable and having a nap blanket that they can call their own will make them feel safe and comfortable during rest time. Our students would be so happy to see these things on the first day of school.
