The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.
- Albert Einstein.
Embroidery is "mystery". With few materials you can create the most complex narrative. It enables us to meditate, relax and generate great patterns and color combinations.
My students are bright and creative.
They are incredibly diverse and generous with their stories. Many countries are represented and it helps guide the art class to adventurous destinations.
They enjoy painting, drawing and sculpting with the supplies we have access to but we would like to try using fibers to mix colors and create master pieces in a less obvious way.
My students like working together even if the project is individual. This unit on fabric arts is meant to create a final product that unites not only a class but all of my art classes together (as well as give each child a final product to take home).
My Project
I have requested embroidery hoops, fabric, needles and embroidery floss.
Without the hoops, embroidery is an impossibility in my class.
With 220 students, I need a very large amount of needles and thread to make this yearly project a reality.
These supplies will enable me to teach and give ALL of my students the ability to embroidery art work.
Teaching embroidery is meaningful to me because it instructs my students on how to use different materials to make art but also to use as a skill.
Embroidery can be used in different career paths or every day life. (Fashion, costume design, sewing...)
Embroidery is also a soothing activity that relaxes my students to deal with the out side stress they are constantly confronting.
We are a T1 school so a majority of my students will never have the personal funds to acquire these materials.
