Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are preschoolers who come from different backgrounds. They attend an inner city school and 100% of them receive free and reduced-price lunch and live below the poverty line.
These students come from different backgrounds and ethnicities.
I have students who speak mostly Spanish. My students are Hispanic and African American. What I know about these students is that they are critical thinkers who like to imagine and problem solve and figure out how things work.
My Project
It is very important for students to see diverse materials in the classroom. These materials will show students many different cultures in every area of the classroom. The students will be able to explore and learn about different cultures. It is so important that they see the materials in every area of the classroom. The Multi-Ethnic School Doll Set and Multi-cultural food assortment will be used in our dramatic play center. The Picture Globe will be explored in the discovery center. The Differing Abilities Puzzles and Children of The World Puzzle will be used in the Toys and Games center. The Block Play People sets will be used in the block center, and the Crayons will be used in the art center.
Preschool students need to see themselves and the people they love in the environment in which they are learning.
When students play with materials that reflect their own culture they build self-confidence and pride. Preschool students also need to see cultures that are different to their own to be exposed to new things, and gain a sense of empathy.
These materials will give students those opportunities and will help them build self-confidence, pride, and empathy. All of these materials will be available for the students to explore during free choice time.
