This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school in Charlotte, North Carolina. The school provides students with a safe and stable learning environment in a sometimes violent and unstable neighborhood. The students are provided with free breakfast and lunch each day to ensure that they have the fuel they need to be active learners. Our school works hard to motivate our students to reach for the stars by promoting college and career readiness starting in kindergarten.
I believe that a zip code should not determine a child's future.
That is why my scholars need your help to provide the best nurturing and engaging learning environment to ensure their success. They are smart, loving and incredibly gracious children who deserve the world.
My Project
I am requesting puzzles, paint and dress-up materials to foster a learning environment that encourages my students to learn more about their diverse classmates through play. In the past year, I have fully experienced the importance of allowing children the time to play while at school as a method to improve behavior. For the first 30 minutes that my students are in my classroom, they are allowed to play with their peers as a way to get to know each other and as a way to learn how to get along with others.
Allowing students to play during free time helps them to focus during the school day and differentiate between learning time and free time.
I want to provide my students with play materials that represent their cultures. Diverse family puzzles, various skin color paints, and career dress up shirts will help my students to learn more about the other cultures in our classroom. It will also help them to see themselves in the play materials. I hope these materials will encourage an inclusive classroom of respect and friendship.
