My Students

A typical day in my classroom has students deeply immersed in an integrated curriculum by reading and writing across social studies and science. They learn about a topic by reading, writing, speaking, listening, and interacting with it through different media, including art, and STEM tasks.

My students are wonderful caring individuals who learn best when taught in a variety of ways.

My students come from different backgrounds from around this world. Within my classroom, I have many different languages spoken, including Swahili, French, Arabic, and English. I have many children who are refugees, children who come from low-income homes, and children who are homeless.

My Project

I would like to have A Boy Called Bat and the novel Out Of My Mind to read with my students. Both books are about students overcoming differences.

A Boy Called Bat is a heartwarming story about a boy who has Autism.

This book will help my students be sympathetic to the classroom of students in my building who are autistic.

Out of My Mind is a great story about the struggles of a student who has a physical disability that does not allow her to talk verbally. The book is about her struggle to communicate with the world around her.

Both stories will be used in small group settings where students will be able to make connections to characters who struggle.
