Embracing Diversity in the Library

Help me give my students diverse books to learn about other people and cultures.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Mickelson's classroom raised $275

My Project

Our students attend a rural middle school in northwestern Wisconsin. Over half of our students come from economically disadvantaged households and we have refugee students mainly from Somalia and Mexico. The school library media center serves an important purpose of providing resources for our students and teachers.

The library is the hub of the school.

The library provides an important benefit for students to provide books they can check out as many of our students come from print poor households.

The library provides a place where all cultures, ethnicities and view points are available. I would like to provide books that offer my readers a diverse selection of characters and authors.

Books offer a safe place to experience the world.

Students need books that are "windows, mirrors and doors" to experience other cultures. A book might be the only insight a reader has about another culture or country and it is important to have an accurate representation. It is also important to offer books from other countries that have been translated into English because it truly gives a first person view point of that part of the world.
