Hi! I am an elementary librarian. My students thirst for interesting and exciting information on topics they don't normally observe in their everyday lives. I love that I have the opportunity to expand a student's thinking.
We are a PreK-5th grade elementary school in a Kansas urban area with a diverse population of 415 students from varying cultures, socioeconomics, and life experiences.
These students love hearing about new topics and ideas. Information is always evolving and expanding and with current budget restraints, it is often difficult to keep up with relevant and up-to-date information.
My Project
With our ever changing world, students need to be exposed to an array of lifestyles that may be different than their own.
Reading a thought provoking book is a valuable gateway to introduce students to something new and challenging.
Diversity is often discussed in the context of race or gender, but diversity is more than either of those. Diversity includes how we each live differently. It may be the foods we eat, how we love, who we love, or the social stigmas and norms we choose to fight against.
I am asking for an assortment of books on a variety of current social issues such as homelessness, parents in prison, and military families. The Sandwich Swap is a story of two girls willing to trade lunch and try to something new. Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth discusses foster families while several other books introduce reduced family finances, abuse, and same sex families.
These books will help explain the wide and sometimes challenging concept of diversity so students can better interact with others around them.
