My students need class sets of books. These books (Rules, Out of My Mind, etc.) embrace differences and promote awareness of disabilities, cultures, and current events.
"When given the choice between being right and being kind. Choose kind." -R.J. Palacio from the book "Wonder".
The books that are listed for this project promote acceptance and teach children how to embrace differences, while providing them the opportunity to further their literacy skills.
Although it is the summer, I am writing on behalf of my future students.
I don't know them yet but I can tell you that they are individuals who are intelligent, caring, fun, and ready to learn. However, these students have some odds stacked against them. A majority of these children have free or reduced meals and are labeled high-risk due to their home circumstances. But I know that with my teaching experiences, their hard work, and the right materials, we can make this year a huge success!
My Project
The school that these children attend is a Title I school, which means that it services a large population of economically disadvantaged youth. The materials requested for this project, class sets of books, will be used in whole group and small group instruction. Without these materials, it will be difficult to engage the students in literacy and promote positive reading, writing, and speaking/listening skills. Not only will these books bring new perspectives to the students, they will also help them on their path to be scholars and kind humans.
Books have the opportunity to change lives and can provide children with the chance to connect to something meaningful.
The books on this list have been carefully chosen to promote acceptance and awareness of disabilities, cultures, current events, and above all else, compassion.
