My classroom is full of students who are emergent bilingual learners. All of my students are learning English. My emergent bilingual learners are either recent arrivals or brand new to the country. My students bring a wide variety of cultures, languages, and experiences to the classroom in order to create a diverse learning environment.
In addition to learning English, my students are expected to expand their knowledge in order to reach the 2nd grade Common Core curriculum state standards.
My school is a small inclusive public school that is part of a large urban district where over 75% received free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
A large part of our week is a time called studios. During studios, students have a choice of working at a discovery studio, research studio, writing and storytelling studio, building studio, and art studio. This is a critical time for my students to explore and deepen their learning in a creative and unique way.
Studios is also an important time for my emergent bilingual learners to develop their oral language and for all of my students to develop their social emotional learning by engaging with each other.
However, the art studio can get a little messy and the clean up time can detract from our learning time. If we have a more organized system with paper trays and craft organizers, my students will be able to keep track of their materials and clean up faster!
