Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom are some of the strongest little kiddos I have ever met! These students come from low income, high trauma homes and need some loving and support from you all! The neighborhoods they come from are found in urban Kansas City, Kansas and include many diverse backgrounds. Some of the cultures we see include Hispanic, Burmese, Chin, Hmong and Swahili families. Many of the students that come to us are English Language Learners and in a school setting for the first time.
The make up of my classroom consists of half Head Start general education students as well as half special needs students who require an individualized education plan and have many diverse needs of their own.
As a whole school, we serve over 600 students who come to school for our half day program. Because their home life is a struggle, it is our job to wear the many hats required of us in order to build successful, talented, and well rounded youngsters of today's society!
My Project
The materials I am asking for my students have great meaning to our classroom already. When you look through the supplies I am asking for, you will see that many of the items are play materials. This is because the students in my classroom are all diagnosed with Autism and struggle in social situations. My students are not able to communicate verbally, which makes it hard for them to play with their peers. The supplies we would love to have would teach them how to correctly play with materials and will be used to play with peers. We just need your help in getting everything through our door!
We are asking for play kits that allow for many different ways to use, so there is not a right or wrong way to play.
Some of the toys we are asking for are pretend foods such as an ice-cream shop, bakery and pizzeria. We are also asking for community helpers like a farmer with animals, a mechanic with a garage, and a doctor's bag.
All the toy kits will be used with my Autistic students in a one on one situation to start. This will give them the opportunity to learn how the toys are appropriately played with, suggestions for using the toys and ways to ask others to play with them. Once the students are using the toys appropriately, the kits will be put out into the classroom, so the special needs students can play with the typically developing peers on their own.
