"I wrote a story!" "Me too!" "Read mine!" If you have been in a first grade classroom lately you have probably heard these statements. My students need an Elmo document camera to enhance their reading, writing and math skills on a daily basis.
From the first day of school I noticed something special about this class.
They love to read and write! Every day one of my students brings in something he or she has written. And, even more amazing, they listen to one another in a kind and polite way!
An Elmo document camera would allow the children to show their work as they read it. What a outstanding opportunity for them to share their illustrations along with written work! First graders learn by example, and an Elmo will make the examples so much more clear.
I am blessed to be able to teach in a fabulous school full of hard-working students and teachers. Our district has a high number of low-income families, many of whom have been hit by unemployment. The children, however, come to school prepared to learn and grow. They take advantage of every opportunity to become better readers and writers. Although they come from diverse backgrounds, they come together every day like a little family.
My Project
An Elmo document camera will enhance our math, reading and writing lessons every day.
Many first grade math lessons include coins, rulers, calculators and clocks as teaching tools. If I am able to use real items in my lessons, the children will have a clear picture of what they are counting or comparing.
I would also use the Elmo in my reading lessons. For example, I could demonstrate comprehension skills and strategies. How great it would be to share a page from our story and highlight the main idea, characters, plot or setting. Is there a word that some children don't understand? We could look in a dictionary for clarification.
During writing lessons, the Elmo document camera would allow me the opportunity to teach writing skills using the work of each of my students. We could check for sentence structure, punctuation and correct grammar. Errors could be easily corrected.
An Elmo document camera is a learning tool that we would use each and every day.
My students have so much potential!
They are eager readers and writers! An Elmo document camera would allow them to become even better readers and writers as they learn and grow together. These children work so hard at school during the day for me and then in the evening at home with their parents. They deserve to have the best technology in their classroom. Please help my lessons come alive by providing us with an Elmo document camera.
