My students need some magazine subscriptions to enhance their learning and help them stay informed about what is happening in the world. The bins will be helpful to organize our magazines and materials for each week/month.
Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Vietnam, Burma, and Jordan are a handful of the places my students have come from. The majority of my students came from countries that are not safe. Some have lived in refugee camps and others haven't been able to attend school in years.
Without a curriculum, supplementary materials such as articles and newspapers for kids, would really enhance the learning in my classroom.
The majority of our students are reading at a low elementary level. It is difficult to find interesting material at a low level of language.
My Project
Many of our students live in homes where no English is spoken. They watch the news from their home country and read the newspaper to find out what is happening in other places. Often times they don't know what is going on in the town, city, state, or even country, they live in.
The TIME for kids and scholastic subscriptions give them the opportunity to find out what is going on in the world through texts that are at their level.
It is difficult to find interesting texts at their reading level. Most of these students are in middle school and they are reading at an elementary level. These articles will give them something interesting and relevant to read.
