My amazing students are challenged to learn Economics and English at the same time! They are recent immigrants from Central America and beginning speakers of English. They must pass the same high school exams as their native-born peers. How is this even possible?
These enthusiastic newcomers can master key economic concepts using texts with exemplary visuals, concrete language, and a real-world connection.
Many work in restaurants to help support their families, and they are highly motivated to learn about economics!
New speakers of English can access abstract economic concepts when they have the right tools. My project will employ a visually rich, leveled text to teach newcomers the academic vocabulary of Economics. They will interpret illustrations in "The Tortilla Factory" to better understand its text and the role of land, labor, and capital as "factors of production." This approach will engage students' visual literacy skills and work experience in restaurants and agriculture.
Your donation for these beautifully illustrated books will help English language learners access the economics curriculum.
The second text provides "info-graphics" for similar use throughout the year. Help me empower students by leveraging their strengths.
