We are an inner-city school with a high poverty rate and ethnically diverse population. My students are creative and spend their days not only attending core classes like Math, Science, and English, but a variety of art classes like Drama, Martial Arts, Guitar, and Photography.
Our school prepares students for college in an academically challenging, arts-integrated environment.
Not only are my students involved in extra-curricular activities, but they are also dedicated to their grades. Many stay at school until five or six pm, either in tutoring or attending a club meeting. My students are well rounded and participate in activities like volleyball, ballroom dance, basketball, cheerleading and a variety of clubs from Student Council to National Honor Society and everything in between.
My Project
Every year I take my karate team to a winter training camp to help them brush up and stay sharp on their skills and to improve areas they might be struggling with. We plan on attending that camp again this year, but the team is more excited than ever before. Karate is becoming an increasingly competitive sport, for my team to continue to compete against other teams as well as we have in the past, we have to stay top notch.
This year kata champion Damien Quintero will be one of the instructors.
He is arguably one of the best kata practitioners on the planet.
There will also be world champion instructors in the areas of sparring, weapons and physical conditioning. This camp is exhausting, and my students look forward to it every year.
