I provide services for and incredible group of middle school diverse learners. These kids are talented in a variety of ways. There are artists, singers, dancers, and athletes. Some of our students have particular sensory needs. There is an area in our classroom that is dedicated to the sensory needs of certain students.
When the sensory needs of our students are met, anxiety is significantly reduced and students accomplish tasks and meet goals.
There are books, blocks and clay to occupy students. Foam mats cover the floor area and there is a bean bag and abdomen ball for student to and books for students to relax with. There are foam mats on the floor, an abdomen ball and bean bag for students to relax on. Missing is the rocking chair that has been a part of the sensory area until it recently fell into disrepair. Our students truely enjoyed the oversize rocking chair. The chair worked as a reset device and incentive for many of our students. Our students miss the comfort brought by the chair.
Some students in our classroom have special sensory needs. Many times, the routine of the daily class and school schedule can present challenges that cause students stress and anxiety. Essentially, students need to take a sensory break periodically during and throughout the school day in order to circumvent or calm sudden feelings of irritability and uneasiness. Our classroom has an array of items that students can use for sensory needs, but a favorite of many students, the rocking chair, just this year, became hazardously broken and was discarded.
Your contribution to this rocking chair, will serve to alleviate
tons of stressful and anxious moments during the student’s day
and provide a healthy and independent option for students to
learn to self-manage in a variety of situations going forward.
Some of our students will work to complete assignments for an opportunity to spend time in the rocking chair while reading a book, surfing the web on an iPad, or simple relaxing. Students also are guided to demonstrate social interactions with peers when sharing the chair with other classmates. Also, students sought out the rocking chair in times of stress, and so, they were able to use the chair as a self-regulating tool for their behaviors. Student’s utilization of the chair allowed them to continue through the school day with considerably less stress and adult intervention.
