All of the students that will be benefiting from this project attend a therapeutic, self-contained, special education program. Our students have struggled in traditional classrooms and perform best when given opportunities for hands-on, interactive, and creative methods of accessing the curriculum.
The students in the program need opportunities to learn real-life skills and receive hands-on vocational training opportunities.
They are residents of Hartford, CT and they have been identified as high risk in terms of graduation rates, access to and success within post-secondary education and/or training programs, and high rates of incarceration.
My Project
In the RISE Academy we always try and maintain an assortment of snacks and drinks for our students. We use some of the supply to support students who do not have enough to eat at home and may require assistance with getting enough to eat. We also have incorporated snacks as an option for our incentive program. The students love this, they enjoy having choices and being able to "purchase" treats through our "store".
The philosophy behind this project is rooted in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
We know that many of our students are unable to concentrate in school when they are hungry. Although they can receive breakfast and lunch in the school many of the students in the RISE Academy have obligations which prevent them from getting to school early enough for breakfast. Some of our students who are able to receive breakfast in school still find themselves getting hungry throughout the day. It is difficult for two small meals to make up for not having dinner or other food options at home. We have found great success in student performance when we are able to eliminate this basic need. Thank you for your consideration and support. We appreciate you.
