Elevating Our Slimy Experience

My students need eleven book titles focused around snails as well as a book set about plants to bridge the learning comparisons between plants and animals.

Slippery, slimy snails are the new inhabitants in my third grade classroom. They are a motivational force for conversing, questioning, and researching.

The day that the snails arrived in the classroom, the kids were beyond excited. Immediately, each snail had a name. Each snail was labeled in one way or another based on the behaviors that students observed. These critters inspired even my most reluctant writers to pick up their science notebook and jot down observational data about the slimy creatures, without me even suggesting it. Every day the children walk into the classroom to check on the snails to be sure their habitat is in proper condition. They know what a snail needs to survive and are bound and determined to provide everything possible for their newfound friends. Imagine 25 children arguing over who gets to clean the snail habitat. Yes, many do so with noses plugged, but they have ownership, responsibility, and a general connection with these live creatures. Each time they encounter the snails, questions arise and learning takes place. Conversations occur between peers who might not otherwise choose to converse with one another. True scientific inquiry is underway. I love to overhear a group of students say, "I wonder why..." or "I wonder what would happen if..." The snails are a driving force in our classroom.

With all of this motivation in the classroom, the children need extra materials to really assure that this scientific experience can branch out to every subject throughout the day. The motivating content can be incorporated into literacy with the addition of a set of books related to snails. Some books are non-fiction so that students can research the burning questions that they have. Others are fictional accounts that we can bring into the classroom to talk about the various genres of books, and encourage children to branch out and write their own books inspired by the snails.

With your help, we can broaden the learning experience in our third grade classroom to guide learning beyond the scientific content, keying into the high interest and motivation that is already present in the room. When children are motivated and excited about learning, true learning takes place. Imagine, these books will impact the children this year, as well as provide a rich learning environment for children in years to come.
