Help me give my students a modern and flexible work space for whole class demonstrations and presentations.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is located in the Armour Square neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago. Our school has a rich history and culture where even two staff members have returned to join the staff after graduating as teachers.
My students, while culturally diverse (68 % Asian, 15% Black, 11% Hispanic and 6% White) are very inclusive and supportive of one another in the classroom.
My students are inquisitive by nature and really shine during science class when allowed to work in groups. Eighty percent of our school is considered low-income and forty-one percent are considered English language learners and so it is critical to have instructional materials and supports to help them be successful. With me as an advocate for them and proper supports, they can continue to succeed and flourish.
So often in class there are items either I want to share or students want to share with the whole class, but with traditional lab tables and limited space with up to 32 students in a classroom can make it difficult to share things with the whole class. A document camera has helped share paper items, but there is still a need to share more three dimensional items from across the room.
"Elevating" our science findings on a standing presentation table seems like a great solution to this problem!
A centralized table work space that is able lift to a standing height would allow all students to see selected items from their seats much easier. Who doesn't want to have a special place to present to their classmates? Having a dedicated presentation space will increase motivation for sharing as well as encourage peer attention.
