My Students

I work with the youngest scholars, in an urban preschool setting. My students are a diverse group of 3, 4, and 5 year olds. Most come from high poverty homes. 85% of the students at my school qualify for free and reduced lunch. I work with typically developing students as well as those with a wide variety of special needs. Most of my students have speech, language, and communication impairments. Some are learning English for the first time. I also have students with special needs including autism, motor concerns, and sensory concerns, and behavioral concerns.

My Project

Many of my students have sensory issues. Sitting on the floor during instruction is difficult for them. Many of them rock over, stretch out or simply get up and walk away from the point of instruction. A CUBE chair provides a student with a defined space without confining them. It supports their back, lifts them off the floor and closer to the point of instruction. This added support allows my students to focus on Large Group instruction. Using the chairs during table work also helps define their space and keeps them focus on the academic work not on using the focus to stay in a “normal” chair.
