Education has changed tremendously in the past few years. We are now moving from providing students with the information to guiding students as they explore and discover the information themselves. In order to do this, we have had to seek out activities and materials to create inquiry-based tasks. While we do have some materials, more are needed to fully support these explorative activities. The more students are able to do on their own and connect their learning to the real world, the better chance they have at truly understanding and retaining the concepts we are teaching.
Many of the students in my classroom come from homes where they are unable to provide the financial and educational support these kids need to thrive.
My colleagues and I are always looking for ways to help fill these voids in our students lives - by donations, by spending extra quality time together, or though extra educational experiences.
My Project
Many of our students do not get opportunities to go on trips with their families. I would like to take our 6th grade students to the Norwalk Maritime Center in Norwalk, CT to view the exhibits as well as view an IMAX movie ¨Born To Be Wild¨. We received a grant to help pay for part of their admission to the center, but we could use some assistance with the transportation cost. This field trip not only gives them a chance to get out of Naugatuck, but also affords them an amazing experience to see animals up close and personal, learn about them, and explore the ways in which those animals must adapt in order to survive. Our students read about it in school, however, the opportunity to see it up close and personal would allow them to make important, deeper and lasting connections. It will enhance their education as well as provide fond memories for the year. Without assistance, most of our students will not be able to pay their way to go on this trip.
