Elementary to High School: My Perception

My students need a printer, photo paper, markers and a photo book to create a photo history documentation of themselves as an elementary student and then again in 5 years as a high school student.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine living in the projects and seeing desperation all around you? My students ride a bus from their projects into our semi-affluent neighborhood where our school is located, wanting to find a way out! They work hard and overcome obstacles many would shy away from. They are amazing and achieve more every year. They have ideas, thoughts and dreams. They only lack the money to have these dreams come true. Hearing stories from first hand survivors of such an atrocity as the Holocaust, gives them courage to survive their lives.

My students are a multi-cultural group who become a family within our time together.

They have created murals, gardens, benches and more that brighten the day of all the students in our school. They created murals to honor Anne Frank and wrote Anne Frank quotes on benches. Tolerance is a huge part of our curriculum and plays an important part of all that we are and do. We brainstorm for ideas and I write grants to help their ideas come to life. For the last 10 years, we have even raised the money to go to South California to tour the Museum of Tolerance.

My Project

My students recently returned from visiting the Japanese American National Museum where we were able to learn more about the cruelty Japanese Americans suffered during WWII. While there, we saw The Hapa Project. The Hapa Project documents the art work of Kip Fulbeck as he portrays multiracial identity through art. My students were impressed and on the long bus ride home, we decided to do something similar.

What would it be like if we took photos of each of my students as elementary students and continued to keep up with them to then take another photo in 5 years?

How would their perceptions change? Would they have the same thoughts of who they are? We need printers, printer paper, ink and markers to create a lasting detailed art project. Each child will be photographed in a basic, stark picture now and then again 2023.

Each child will write a short paragraph about how they perceive themselves as a person, as their racial configuration and as a member of society. Will their ideals change? Will they grow in their own skin?
