Elementary Students Become Civil Engineers Building Ozobot Neighborhoods

My Students

My STEM Specialty Class serves 4 classes in each grade, 1st through 6th. This is the newest specialty class in our school. The students cannot get enough of STEM, they are constantly asking me, "When does my class come to STEM again?" I plan all of my projects around the 4 C's, collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking. We build and problem solve and listen and succeed and fail and most importantly, we learn that we do our best when we support one another!

My Project

In STEM we want to learn to be Civil Engineers while doing some basic coding with Ozobots. Ozobots are tiny robots, no bigger than a golf ball. They "drive" on roads that are drawn with black markers and are coded using colored markers.

The students will design maps for their Ozobots to drive around on and then they are working in small groups to combine their maps into larger neighborhoods.

They are coding the bots to tell them where to drive and some tricks to do while driving around.

This class set would serve hundreds of students. My STEM lab serves 4 classes in each grade, 1st through 6th, in our elementary school.
