Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach Strings classes for 4th and 5th grade in 5 Orange County elementary schools, 2 of which are Title 1 schools and receive free lunch every day. Many students are first-generation, whose parents immigrated from Haiti, Brazil, Venezuela and Puerto Rico. There are students from low-income families, and even homeless students. No matter the obstacles they face at home, they are some of the brightest and most talented kids and they come to class eager to learn how to play new songs on their instrument!
My Project
We provide as much as we can for students in order for them to be able to participate in this free class. We have a limited number of materials for students to use in class, such as music stands and music books. Unfortunately, much of our current inventory needs to be replaced, as stands become old and no longer support the weight of even one music book! We don't always have an audio system available, for instance when our class is held on a cafeteria stage during lunch, and it is difficult to hear each other and our accompaniment music! These kids deserved to feel and sound like the soon-to-be professional musicians that they are!
