Help me give my students a listening center. When they listen to literature read by a fluent reader, they improve their own fluency, reading comprehension, learn new vocabulary, and grow to love reading and learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in an inner city school in Elgin, Illinois. There are 21 students in my class this year. They speak Spanish at home and in school they are learning in Spanish and English. Our school is an inner city school with approximately 85% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. At home my students do not have many resources or books. I send books home with them each night so they can read or have their parents read aloud to them. Many of them do not have computers or internet access to allow them to read books on line. Some of their parents work long hours or even two jobs to take care of their families and do not have a lot of time to dedicate to helping with homework.
In class, I provide as much exposure to books and literacy as possible.
Every day I read books in English and Spanish aloud to them. The students also have books to read at their own reading level. In addition, our district provides computers to share in class with programs aimed at helping students learn reading strategies.
My Project
A new listening center will help promote literacy by allowing my students to listen to books that are too hard for them to read by themselves. They will be able to choose from among 3 books with recordings on tape or CD.
As they listen to a fluent reader read, their own fluency, comprehension, language, and vocabulary will improve.
They will also learn that reading is enjoyable. This will inspire them to become even better readers.
Studies show that students who are better readers are more successful in school and stay in school longer. I hope to send my students on to the next grades prepared to be successful.
