My students need magazines to read in small groups, centers, and for research projects during media specials. We are completely without magazines and our students deserve access to a variety of reading materials.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at our school are not used to an environment quite like the one provided in their media center. The books are all free to use, the Makerspace materials are beginning to build, and computers and iPads for 30 students to access, help build learning resources that enhance their content in math, language arts, science, and social studies. Our students live in a lower socio-economic neighborhood in southern Colorado. They are not used to the media center environment because their families can't afford technology and books to expose their children to the world around them.
All of our student body receives free breakfast and lunch, along with a morning and afternoon snack because for some, school is a reliable food source, not a place to learn.
Our students deserve more than what our current media center offers. For too long, it was home to the books and nothing else. Now, it has transformed into a warm and welcoming environment that encourages collaboration, creativity, and learning into one space. Students are eager to learn in this new space and should be encouraged to build on their curiosities to better their education toward building a better future for themselves.
My Project
Our elementary library doesn't have access to current magazines for kids. These Scholastic News magazines can be used with K-5 students in a variety of ways: centers, small groups, and research projects. With these subscriptions, students can access information from another source besides the internet and our books.
By providing our students with a variety of reading materials, including magazines, I hope to foster a love for non-fiction reading.
My hope is that the cover topics will draw students' attention to the magazine, and after reading more, they end up researching more about something new they learned about from reading.
