Hearing a child say, "I don't have anything to read" can be very discouraging to a teacher. Therefore teachers came together to create a Book Room to provide students with books that they will enjoy and are able to read. Right now we are lacking books for students reading at a 2nd grade level.
Waunakee is a community of about 11,000 residents.
Historically, Waunakee has been a white, working and middle class community. However the demographics have changed and we now have families of different ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Waunakee is one of the most rapidly growing communities in Dane County, increasing by 5,000 people during the last decade. Student to teacher ratio ranges from 18:1 to 25:1. The district Mission Statement is: "Committed to Children…Committed to Community…Committed to Excellence" Our goals at Heritage are that all students will grow in their reading skills, increase their science knowledge and application, feel respected by others, and show respect to others.
My Project
We are looking to purchase a variety of leveled readers to support any student reading at a second grade level. These books are from a variety of literary genres. They will help develop areas such as comprehension; they can be used to identify cause and effect; they will support teaching theme; they will allow teachers to practice analyzing story elements; as well as can be used to draw conclusions. We will add these books to our Book Room and children will use them during independent reading time, guided reading groups, and at home with families.
Our school's mission is: "At Heritage Elementary we help each other learn and grow every day in a safe and positive environment." The best way we can do this is by helping each child develop as a reader and by giving them engaging, exciting, and appropriate books to read at school and at home with their families.
This project will allow us to get more books in children's hands.
