My Students

At my school, many of my students come from poverty, and we serve our Special Needs students and English Language students integrated into our general education population. Our students receive some science education at the middle school year, but, like so many students nationwide, haven't experienced the level of hands-on science they need to develop a positive relationship with the subject matter or seem themselves as budding scientists. However, our school is driven by a culture of academic and personal pride, inclusivity, and desire for success. Our students work hard in the classroom so that they will graduate college and be career ready. They know that a high school diploma is the first step towards a successful future for themselves and the community they love.

My Project

Chemistry is an abstract subject that often confuses kids because they can't see what is happening at the atomic level. This leaves students feeling unengaged and frustrated, especially my kinestic learners who do best through experience. That is, until they have a n Element Observation Kit in their hands. My goal is to help my students engage with chemistry in a new way, by literally providing them with a variety of elements to see up close and in person. I want to use these kits as a spring board to talking about elements' properties, and the genius that is the periodic table. There's so much to learn about atoms and the periodic table, and this is the first step in that journey!
