Every teacher loves the students they work with, however, I do believe that my group of ESL (English as a Second Language) students are extremely special. The students I work with have come to the United States from countries all across the globe! These teenagers have left behind everything they've known- friends, culture, and even family. Despite the challenges of living in a new country, learning a new culture and language, and adjusting to an entirely new school system, they work hard every single day to achieve their goals.
My students understand that education is the key to success.
In order to be successful, they know they must first master the English language. Without becoming fluent in English, they know they will struggle academically as well as in everyday life outside of school. Their dedication to education while studying a new language is truly something to be admired.
In order to help my students to further develop their English language skills, my school system has adopted a new program, titled Language Live. This program is a researched-based reading intervention program that is split into two components. The first component, text training, is direct instruction provided by me, the teacher. During this time, lessons are centered around vocabulary development, grammar, reading fluency, and comprehension strategies. The second component is word training. This part, which is all on the computer (or tablet), consists of individual, self-paced, activities in which students work on letter pronunciation, sight words, and reading.
Although this program is proven to help older students become better readers, my classroom does not have enough electronic devices to complete the word training portion of the program.
This component is essential to student growth as shown in their lexile level and reading ability. Students are able to fill in the gaps that they missed in earlier education. With these tablets my students would be able to strengthen their reading skills which will help them not only academically, but with everything in life that lies ahead of them.
