The cost of a notbeook computer, a scan converter, and 100 CD-R discs is $1567, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
This project would help to strengthen note-taking and presentation skills for all students. Students will take turns being the class "scribe." On the day that they are the scribe, they will take notes on what we learn, what we do, and they will jot down notes about funny or unusual things that happen. One other student will be the class photographer each day. That person will use a digital camera to take photos and even video clips of the day's events. The next day, these two students will use an Aver-Key computer projector to review the previous day's learning with the class. They will show the photos they have taken and read their notes to the class. This will help students to recall information they have learned, as well as improve their note-taking and speaking skills.
This project will also be a valuable tool to use when students are absent and need to get caught up. They will be able to simply review the electronic scrapbook for the days they missed.
I teach Language Arts in a public middle school in a rural area of South Carolina. Over 90 percent of our students are on subsidized meals, and many students do not have access to the technological resources that this project would utilize.
To complete this project, we would need a laptop computer, a digital camera (which I am willing to provide), and an Aver-Key, which is computer-to-television projector. I plan to have all 68 of my students participate in this project at least twice per semester. At the end of the year, I would like to burn the year's electronic scrapbook onto a CD for every student, so we would also need writeable CDs for each student.
I believe this project will give students a leadership role in class and will help to build their public-speaking abilities. It will help them learn to take notes, and it will also provide them with an electronic scrapbook of their seventh-grade year that they can enjoy for many years to come.
